2021 - A Review

I am one of those people who fall into the typical, cliché category of all things “new year”. I do reviews, I make resolutions, the works.

While most might see 2021 as the year that “life got back to “normal”, it was a very challenging year for my family and I. Not bad, but just challenging. Especially the latter half of the year.

However, through all the challenges 2021 gave us, my family stuck through them together. We are stronger, closer, and more loving because of them.

Life did begin to look more normal compared to 2020. Drew and I were both vaccinated three months into the new year and so we felt much more comfortable to do “normal’ things. However, going back to what was normal was also a struggle for us. Going through 2020, made us realize that we needed to slow down a bit. We needed to take sometime on a regular basis for our selves and stop squeezing in every single thing. Finding a new balance was and has been tough. We are usually big “YES” people, but now we have realized the value in saying “NO” as well.

We did manage to throw a first birthday party for our sweet Hazel. Poor girl was born during the craziest year of my lifetime and had barely met any of her family. So we were grateful that we were able to throw a fun shindig to celebrate our beautiful sweet girl. Right after her first birthday, Hazel started walking and it’s been full speed ahead for her since then. Seeing Hazel’s personality develop has been so much fun! She’s a very shy kiddo at first, but once she is comfortable, she is one of the silliest kid’s I have ever met. She had a bit of a scare with being hospitalized for about four days for oxygen issues, which was one of the scariest things I’ve ever experienced, but we’ve got her asthma under control now and feel good about how we are moving forward with things.

For Evelyn, preschool got more “normal”. She’s absolutely blossomed this year and it has reminded me about how important in-person school, and social interaction is for kiddos. She’s becoming such an amazing little person. 2021 has been very good to her. We enrolled her into a great ballet academy and she absolutely loves it. She might be battling a little bit of stage freight but her passion for ballet continues to grow. We took her to the Nutcracker and she’s been going on and on about how she wants to be the Sugar Plum Fairy. She took private swim lessons this past summer and has become quite the little fish, her favorite thing to do this summer was jump off the dock at the beach house. She’s so curious about all the things. She asks us these questions that we can’t believe she thinks of. She’s also so empathetic and caring about others. The world is so lucky to have a soul like her in the world.

Giving my daughters one another has been the best thing I could have ever done for them. They are so sweet together and I am having the best time watching the two of them grow their friendship, what a blessing! This past year has been more joyful because of the two of them together. Evelyn is great at looking over her and teaching her new things, while occasionally cautioning her to stay safe and out of trouble. Hazel’s whole world revolves around her big sister, always trying to keep up and find ways to join in the fun. It’s amazing to watch the two of them together.

Drew and I, on the other hand, had a bit of a rough year. Not as a couple, but we just had a lot of things we were faced with. Nothing we couldn’t handle but we both felt like we aged a lot this year.

Moving back into a semi normal life was a bit of a random struggle. Figuring out what we both felt comfortable with, respecting each other for not necessarily moving at the same pace as the other, it was all about finding a balance there. However, we had a full bottle of champagne the second we were both fully vaccinated.

Drew got a fantastic new job, I couldn’t be more proud of him. However, he went from working from home for over a year to going back into the office and at times working longer hours than we were used to within a week. It all happened very quick and we didn’t have enough time to mentally prepare ourselves or the girls for that big change. So there was a big of a struggle to find our footing within the new change, but I feel like we finally have. Thank goodness. August and September was a bit rough and chaotic.

We lost our first baby, our fur baby, Tessa. That was incredibly tough and I’m so grateful we had each other to lean on during that time. We still miss her dearly and are not used to her absence in our home yet. She was the best pup ever and we feel blessed to have had her with us for as long as we did.

We did gain a niece though at the end of October! I have nieces and nephews on Drew’s side of the family but this is the first time I’ve had it on my side of the family. It has been so much fun watching my baby sister become a mum to her own kiddo. We are all just a big pile of goo for sweet Blair Marie.

At the end of October, we faced the first time one of our children had a serious health issue. With the way everything went down, the first portion of Hazel’s hospitalization and ambulance ride, we couldn’t be together. Drew had to be home with Evelyn and it was so hard for him not to be there and rely only on my communication with him via my dying cell phone. It might be dramatic to say it, but it was a terrifying time for us. After that first portion, Drew was finally able to join us in the hospital and that definitely helped. It was only four days but it felt much longer and it left us extremely exhausted. I still feel like we are catching up from all of that.

Then we lost Drew’s grandmother, the matriarch of his family, in December. She was 93. While this wasn’t a huge surprise, it doesn’t diminish the loss. Like many older relatives, her role was the heartbeat of the family. Not that the family won’t continue on without her, but she was the biggest force keeping everything pumping and flowing. She hosted many of the key holidays and events in the family, she kept you in touch with distance family members, and was just a wealth of family history and traditions. When you think of all that, it was a huge loss.

Despite all these challenges, we’ve been blessed. My husband and I are healthy, our girls are thriving and growing, we have a warm house to sleep in, yummy food in our bellies. What more could we want?

I have high hopes for next year though. I have high hopes for my business, for our home, for our family. I hope we get to travel some next year. I am excited to show the girls how different the world is from our little town and I hope to teach them to embrace and appreciate all those differences. I want to put more focus into Delovely Details now that we are out of the infant stage of life. I hope to get more house projects done and start some of the bigger ones too. I’d really love to have a couple, maybe even a few weekends away with Drew too. My biggest wish, is that we just all stay healthy.

We will see what 2022 has in store for us, I hope you’ll join us for the ride!

You've Got (Snail) Mail!

We are one of those families that send out holiday cards every single year, for almost 15 years now! 99% of the time, I’m running to the post office just a few days before Christmas to make sure I get my cards in the mail.

But not this year!

It’s a holiday miracle folks!

I got these cards out the day after Thanksgiving and you know what, the lack of stress feels UH-MAZING! I even had time to order actual holiday stamps. Since usually I’m so late to the game, I have to use just regular American Flag stamps most of the time. I feel so accomplished and I thought I’d brag and share about it here.

I’ve been a pretty dedicated and loyal fan of Minted for a few years now. I love that they will print the addresses onto my holiday cards for me. It’s a game changer. We send over 100 cards every year and finding the time to address all of those can be hard and very tedious. I love that I can just upload my spread sheet to Minted and they take care of it for me. So happy not to have hand cramps!

I enjoy all holiday cards, but I can’t help but get giddy for the picture ones. I really like to see families grow and age over the years. Sometimes they are photos from people’s travels that year, baby announcements, or just the pooches even. So I like to keep my cards fairly simple since I feel like most people just wanna see the picture.

And when you have gorgeous family pictures like the ones we have from the sweet and talented Joy Theory Co Photography, who wouldn’t want to see this gorgeous family portrait!

Sometimes, I can be so extra that I end up hating myself later. This year, I was so ahead of the game, that I really enjoyed all the extra details I did with our cards. We laser engraved and cut these little buttons that I used bakers twine to wrap around the card. Since everyone who has gotten our Christmas card has loved them so much, I decided to list them in our store here.

I also got a steal on the bumblebee wax stamp during Amazon Prime days during the summer. Our last name means “bumblebee” in Spanish so it’s become something like our family logo or crest. The wax seal was a bit less relaxing to do at first. There is definitely a learning curve to using wax seals. However, once I figured it out, it was sort of therapeutic.

Overall, I’m so happy I took the time and energy to order these cards earlier this year and avoided my normal stress with sending them out. I love receiving holiday cards, they always put a huge smile on my face. I hope those who received a card from us, got a smile from our card this year too.

Do you send out holiday cards every year? Do you have a tradition with them?

If you still need to order your holiday cards, feel free to use my link to save $25 off your purchase of $100 or more.

Mom Wisdom - 5 Products Both Girls Loved!

Now that I’ve been a mother to two humans, you think I would be a bit wiser about raising children…right?

Nope. Not at all! There are two things I know I have learned from being a mum to two girls, that I still know nothing about raising kids and to always just pack the extra snacks.

Cool Beach Day

When we first had Evelyn, we really wanted to remain minimalist with the baby gear. I was incredibly thoughtful and did our due diligence in research for what we thought we needed, what would be worth having for convenience, and what things we could get by without.

Looking back, I think we did a great job. I didn’t really have any products that I didn’t feel like we got our full use out of except for one product (just buy the cheap Ikea high chair!).

When I was pregnant with Hazel, and we found out it was another girl, I was so hopeful that we wouldn’t need to buy any more baby gear and we would still love our old baby products as much as we did the first time around.

Cool Beach Day

We did well with our goal and I’m here to share with you my top 5 favorite products I used for BOTH my girls.

  1. Mom’s on Call - All moms will tell you the “sleep guru” or “sleep method” they use and swear by. Sometimes that’s not even a method at all. Hey, whatever works for you and yours! For us, the answer was Mom’s on Call. I can’t recommend it enough. Both my girls are the best sleepers, but more importantly, I’m so confident in knowing what their needs are because of this book series.

  2. Hatch Baby Rest Sound Machine - We got Hazel her own as soon as we knew she was coming because this has been such an amazing product for our family. Not only is the functionality amazing, but their customer service is out of this world. Between Evelyn’s Hatch and the new one Hazel’s got, there have been some awesome upgrades.

  3. Swaddleme Swaddles and Sleep pods - Since we were very hopeful to give Evelyn a sibling, I kept all of her clothes including her swaddles, sleep sacks, etc. Thank goodness because they all came in use and Hazel slept amazing with them. I was so worried that what worked for Evelyn, wouldn’t work for Hazel and I would be out shopping for all new sleeping solutions with a toddler and a newborn during a pandemic but these worked great for both our girls! (I could easily write a whole blog post about how much I hate buying sleepsacks.)

  4. Dr. Brown’s Formula Pitcher - We didn’t buy this for Evelyn until we were about 3 months in with making bottles every 3 hours, spilling formula all over the counters around the clock and wasting so much formula. This revolutionized the way we conducted our days and we started it on day one with Hazel. If you are a formula family, this is a game changer!

  5. Halo Bassinet - I was actually given a Halo bassinet from my bestie who didn’t love it. We were so lucky because we (Evelyn and myself) loved it! But I was very worried that maybe Hazel wasn’t gonna sleep as well in it. However, it worked great! Maybe too great because I ended up having to wake Hazel up for her feedings those first couple months!

Little Sisters on the Beach

I definitely don’t have the answers to how to be the perfect mum to two kids, I don’t really have a clue if what I am doing is right, and most days I’m overwhelmed with guilt about the possibility of one of my children not getting all their needs or wants completely fulfilled. However, I do find these small wins helpful. I made a few good choices and they have continued to pay off. Woot!
